Artists of Gugging

Lienz

The House of the Artists in Gugging, originally founded in 1981 by Leo Navratil as a centre for art and psychotherapy, is unique in its appearance. Under Johann Feilacher’s management it was expanded into an Art Brut centre with a museum, a gallery, a studio and living quarters. The Artists from Gugging rank among the major representatives of Art Brut. Three of the most renowned artists are August Walla, Johann Hauser and Oswald Tschirtner, whose works have been collected and exhibited not only in the Collection de l’Art Brut in Lausanne, but in many museums of contemporary art such as the Museum of Modern Art Ludwig Foundation in Vienna, the Philadelphia Art Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Setagaya Museum in Tokyo.

In the Gaudens Pedit Gallery can be seen single-motif crayon drawings by Laila Bachtiar, detailed ink drawings by Johann Garber, powerful paintings by Arnold Schmidt and delicate, erotic drawings by Karl Vondal.
